Experimental
Type Design

This is book contains 80 type explorations in total. In this project, it requires one new type design each day with the same topic. I picked the poen Not Waving but Drowning by Stevie Smith. Based on the content and the meaning of the poem, I tried to use different effects to depic water and the melancholy atmosphere.

The problem during the progress of this project is that I was always trying to stick type on grid and keep the maximum readability. This restricted my creativity.

To push the boundary further, I started to add space and depth, try to take the type out of grid and explore more expressive ways. Having chance to break the grid gave me more ideas to show this poem. I went to the abstract direction and add 3D models, the combination of 2D type and 3D model further expand the border of this type design project.

I found many more possibilities of typography from this project.
